False Water Cobra (Hydrodynastes gigas) Care Sheet
Quick Facts
Scientific Name: Hydrodynastes gigas
Common Names: False Water Cobra
Origin: South America – Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina
Adult Size: 180–250 cm (6–8 ft) in length; females generally larger and heavier than males
Lifespan: 12–20 years in captivity
Sex Differences: Females are larger and more robust; males are slimmer with longer tails
Beginner Suitability: Moderate – fast-growing, strong snakes that require careful handling and large enclosures
Enclosure
Size: Juveniles can be housed in 90 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm (3 ft x 1.5 ft x 1.5 ft). Adults require a minimum of 180 cm x 90 cm x 90 cm (6 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft). Larger enclosures are strongly recommended due to their size and activity level.
Substrate: Use a mix of soil, coconut fibre, or cypress mulch to retain humidity. Avoid loose substrates that may cause impaction. Provide deep substrate for burrowing.
Hides: Provide multiple hides on both the hot and cool sides. Include cork bark, logs, or artificial caves for secure hiding.
Heating: Maintain a hot spot of 32–34°C and a cool side of 24–27°C. Night temperatures can safely drop to 21–23°C. Use heat mats, ceramic heat emitters, or basking bulbs with a thermostat.
Lighting: UVB is optional. Maintain a 12-hour light / 12-hour dark cycle.
Humidity: Maintain 60–80% humidity. Provide a large water dish suitable for soaking. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent mold and respiratory issues.
Diet
Primary Diet Type: Carnivore
Food Items: Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents. Juveniles can also take fish or amphibians occasionally. Adults generally consume adult mice, rats, or small rabbits depending on size.
Feeding Frequency: Juveniles every 5–7 days. Adults every 7–10 days.
Feeding Troubleshooting: Ensure prey items are appropriately sized and fully thawed. False Water Cobras are fast feeders but can be defensive; use feeding tongs if necessary. Avoid live prey unless necessary.
Water
Provide a large water dish for soaking and drinking. Water should be changed daily to maintain cleanliness.
Behavior And Handling
False Water Cobras are generally nervous, defensive, and fast-moving. Handle with care and support the full body. Avoid handling shortly after feeding. They are solitary and should only be housed with others for breeding purposes.
Enrichment
Include climbing branches, logs, and deep substrate for burrowing. Provide multiple hides and occasional rearrangement of décor to encourage exploration and activity.
Health
Signs of illness include lethargy, refusal to eat, abnormal stool, respiratory issues, or swelling. Provide proper temperature, humidity, and diet. Consult a reptile-specialist veterinarian if issues persist.
Lifespan
Typically 12–20 years in captivity, with some individuals living longer under optimal care.
Legality In The UK
False Water Cobras are legal to keep in the UK. No licence is required for private ownership. Owners must comply with Welfare of Animals regulations.
