Green Anole

Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) Care Sheet

Quick Facts

Scientific Name: Anolis carolinensis
Common Names: Green Anole
Origin: Southeastern United States
Adult Size: 12–20 cm (5–8 inches) total length
Lifespan: 4–8 years in captivity
Sex Differences: Males are larger with a more pronounced dewlap (throat fan) and brighter coloration; females are smaller and more muted in colour
Beginner Suitability: Easy – hardy, small lizards suitable for beginners

Enclosure

Size: A single adult can be housed in a vertical enclosure measuring 45 cm x 45 cm x 60 cm (18 x 18 x 24 inches). Larger enclosures are preferred for climbing and enrichment. Juveniles can start in smaller enclosures (30 cm x 30 cm x 45 cm) but must be upgraded as they grow.

Substrate: Use coconut fibre, orchid bark, or paper-based substrates. Bioactive setups are recommended. Avoid sand or loose substrates that can cause impaction.

Hides: Provide multiple hiding spots at different heights. Include live or artificial plants, branches, and cork bark for climbing and shelter.

Heating: Maintain a hot spot of 28–32°C and a cool side of 22–25°C. Night temperatures can safely drop to 20–22°C. Use ceramic heat emitters or basking bulbs with a thermostat.

Lighting: Provide full-spectrum lighting and low-level UVB (2–5%) to support health and activity. Maintain a 12-hour light / 12-hour dark cycle.

Humidity: Maintain 50–70% humidity. Mist daily to provide droplets for drinking and to assist with shedding.

Diet

Primary Diet Type: Insectivore

Food Items: Feed small gut-loaded insects such as crickets, locusts, and roaches. Hatchlings require smaller prey. Dust insects with calcium at every feeding and a multivitamin supplement once per week.

Feeding Frequency: Juveniles daily; adults every 1–2 days.

Feeding Troubleshooting: Ensure insects are appropriately sized. Offer variety to encourage feeding. Remove uneaten food to prevent stress or mould growth.

Water

Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water. Mist the enclosure regularly to allow drinking from droplets.

Behavior And Handling

Green Anoles are generally skittish and fast-moving. Handle gently and support the full body. They are solitary and should be housed individually or in compatible pairs with monitoring.

Enrichment

Include branches, plants, and vertical climbing surfaces. Provide hiding spots at multiple heights. Rearrange décor occasionally to encourage natural exploration and activity.

Health

Signs of illness include lethargy, refusal to eat, abnormal stool, retained shed, or swelling. Maintain proper temperature, humidity, and diet. Consult a reptile-specialist veterinarian if issues persist.

Lifespan

Typically 4–8 years in captivity with proper care.

Legality In The UK

Green Anoles are legal to keep in the UK. No licence is required for private ownership. Owners must comply with Welfare of Animals regulations.
