Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) Care Sheet
Quick Facts
Scientific Name: Gekko gecko
Common Names: Tokay Gecko
Origin: Southeast Asia – Indonesia, Philippines, and surrounding regions
Adult Size: 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) total length
Lifespan: 10–15 years in captivity
Sex Differences: Males are larger, have broader heads, and prominent pre-anal pores; females are smaller and slimmer-bodied
Beginner Suitability: Moderate – hardy but aggressive species; not ideal for inexperienced keepers
Enclosure
Size: Minimum 120 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm (4 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft) for a single adult. Larger vertical enclosures are preferred to allow climbing. Juveniles can be housed in smaller enclosures (60–75 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm) but must be upgraded as they grow.
Substrate: Use coconut fibre, orchid bark, or bioactive substrates for climbing and humidity retention. Avoid sand or loose substrates that can cause impaction.
Hides: Provide multiple hides at different heights. Include cork bark, hollow logs, or artificial caves. Vertical climbing structures are essential.
Heating: Maintain a hot spot of 32–35°C and a cool side of 24–27°C. Night temperatures can drop to 20–22°C. Use ceramic heat emitters or basking bulbs regulated with a thermostat.
Lighting: Provide a 12-hour light / 12-hour dark cycle. Low-level UVB (2–5%) is optional but can promote health and activity.
Humidity: Maintain 60–80% humidity. Mist daily or use an automated misting system. Ensure good ventilation to prevent mould and respiratory issues.
Diet
Primary Diet Type: Insectivore
Food Items: Feed gut-loaded insects such as crickets, locusts, roaches, and small silkworms. Adults can also be offered small pinkie mice occasionally.
Feeding Frequency: Juveniles daily; adults every 2–3 days. Dust insects with calcium at every feeding and a multivitamin supplement once per week.
Feeding Troubleshooting: Ensure prey is appropriately sized. Tokay Geckos can be aggressive feeders and may bite. Avoid live prey unless necessary and monitor feeding closely.
Water
Provide a shallow water dish with clean water at all times. Mist the enclosure to maintain humidity and provide droplets for drinking.
Behavior And Handling
Tokay Geckos are aggressive and can bite. Handle with care, using gloves or tongs if necessary. Support the full body when handling. They are solitary and should be housed individually.
Enrichment
Provide branches, cork bark, and climbing surfaces. Include hiding spots at various heights. Rearrange décor occasionally to encourage exploration and natural behaviour.
Health
Signs of illness include lethargy, refusal to eat, abnormal stool, retained shed, or swelling. Maintain proper temperature, humidity, and diet. Consult a reptile-specialist veterinarian if issues persist.
Lifespan
Typically 10–15 years in captivity with proper care, some individuals living longer.
Legality In The UK
Tokay Geckos are legal to keep in the UK. No licence is required for private ownership. Owners must comply with Welfare of Animals regulations.
